Blog 6: I Went to Dubrovnik Alone. Here's Who Came Home.

July 10, 20266 min read

Growth doesn't happen in the comfortable.

It never has. It never will.

Every version of yourself that you're proud of, every shift, every moment of realising you're more than you thought, came from the other side of something that felt uncomfortable first.

I know this because I coach it. And last week in Dubrovnik, I lived it more completely than I ever have before.

I booked the trip before I was ready

I was supposed to visit a friend. I changed my plans.

Not because anything went wrong. Because something in me kept pushing. A feeling I've learned to trust, the one that says this is what you need even when your head hasn't caught up yet.

I needed to be alone. Really alone. Not the kind of alone where you're in your house with your phone and your to-do list and the noise of your own life filling every gap. The kind where you are in a foreign country, you don't know anybody, and the only person you are responsible for is yourself.

I fill my time. I always have. It's something I've been working on. And I knew, with absolute clarity, that I needed a week of not doing that.

Was I ready? No. Was I excited? Yes. Did something keep pulling me toward it anyway? Completely.

That pull is always worth following.

Why discomfort is the only place growth lives

Here's what I want you to understand about growth.

It doesn't happen in the familiar. It doesn't happen in the routine. It doesn't happen in the evenings you've already lived a hundred times.

It happens the moment you walk into the nightclub alone for the first time in your life. The moment you sit down at a restaurant table for one in a foreign city on a Friday night and feel your heart racing and order a drink anyway.

It happens in the gap between who you were before you did the thing and who you are after.

Every single moment of discomfort I put myself in last week built something. Not because the moments were dramatic. Because they were real. Because I showed up for them before I felt ready.

I met an incredible woman who has just lost her husband and was travelling Europe for 5 weeks alone. I chose to lean into her grief rather than deflect from it because it's easier.

And on Friday night a man walked past the bar where I was sitting, stopped, and said four words.

You look very relaxed.

I walked in with my heart racing. And somewhere between sitting down and that moment I had completely relaxed without noticing.

As soon as he said this, a stranger who was walking past and this was his observation, I laughed to myself and realised that I was SO relaxed. When did that shift happen?

That's the thing nobody tells you about confidence. It isn't the absence of nerves. It's what happens when you show up anyway and let the moment meet you.

Shedding the old version

This is the part that matters most.

Doing the uncomfortable thing once is not enough. One brave night doesn't create a new identity. What creates a new identity is the continuous choice to shed the old version of yourself and step into the new one.

The version of you who needs noise to feel comfortable. The version who fills every silence because sitting with yourself feels like too much. The version who says I'll do it another time, which really means I'll do it when I feel ready, which really means never.

That version has to be left behind deliberately. Not dramatically. Just consistently.

Every uncomfortable thing I've done over the last few years, and there have been many, has been a rep. A single contribution to a new version of myself I was building without always being able to see it.

Dubrovnik was where I finally saw the picture.

What I realised at dinner

It happened mid-conversation with myself. I was literally laughing because I was so consumed with feeling nervous going to dinner that I didn't realise that deep down, in my body, I felt liberated, not nervous.

I laughed because that's very typical of me and the women I coach. We get stuck in the old identities and it takes a lot to realise that it’s a story we have actually moved past but haven't realised yet.

And that's when I realised.

There is nothing in my life right now that I don't like.

For the first time. Ever.

I said those words and I meant every one of them.

That's not luck. That's not a holiday high. That's what happens when you spend years choosing the uncomfortable thing on purpose, shedding the old version consistently, and trusting that the growth is happening even when you can't see it yet.

The jigsaw

For a long time I was doing, doing, doing. Trying everything. Implementing everything. And still feeling like nothing was quite connecting.

What I know now is that growth is invisible until suddenly it isn't.

My friends are getting excited to witness my life changing. Telling me they could see the shift before I could fully feel it. Telling me they knew this holiday was going to be life changing.

I can’t tell you the amount of women who messaged me on instagram telling me how inspiring I am and I actually feel this, because it’s real and I inspire myself now.

That's the jigsaw. Not one piece clicking into place. The whole picture was suddenly visible.

As long as you are doing the work, you are moving closer. Even when you can't see it yet. Even when nothing feels like it's connecting.

One day it will. And when it does, everything makes sense in a way it never has before.

What this means for you

You don't need Dubrovnik (but I would recommend it).

But you do need the uncomfortable thing. The thing you keep putting off because the thought of it feels too big. The one thing inside you that you keep getting pulled towards when your head says not yet.

Changing careers, starting a fitness journey, therapy, taking a course, not sitting in front of netflix every night, changing, growing!

That pull is always worth following.

Growth doesn't happen in the comfortable. It happens in the moment you do the thing before you feel ready and discover, on the other side of it, that you were more capable than you thought.

Book the trip. Walk into the room. Sit in silence.

See who comes home.
